The Sindh High Court directed the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) to complete the carpeting of service roads and other work beneath the Gizri flyover in night timings. The petitioner submitted that the construction of a bridge in Gizri was not according to the environmental laws and it was creating hardships for the residents. The petitioner’s counsel said that compliance of the mandatory provision of environment laws was not made by the DHA while constructing the bridge. DHA counsel submitted that a committee has been constituted to look into the matter and sought permission to complete the carpeting of service roads beneath the bridge. The court adjourned the matter till December 16.

Two die in separate incidents

A young motorcyclist was crushed to death when a speeding hit-and-run dumper hit his motorbike near Pankha Hotel within the limits of Sher Shah police station on Thursday, police said. Police said that the victim’s body was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) where he was identified as Shafi Mohammad, 25, son of Abdul Rehman, a resident of Khadda Market area, Lyari. Separately, a teenaged boy identified as Abdullah died while working at his factory near Singer Chowrangi in the Korangi Industrial Area police limits. The deceased was said to be a resident of Future Colony, Landhi. His body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).

Fire extinguished

Fire fighters finally extinguished the fire which broke out at the VCM plant of Engro Polymer & Chemicals Ltd after a five hour struggle early Thursday at the Port Qasim industrial area. According to a Fire Brigade official, the fire erupted in the plant late Wednesday and came under control at 6 am. It was stated to be a B-category fire in which one plant operator Zeeshan received burn injuries and was shifted to a hospital for treatment while no fireman received injuries during the hectic struggle which involved the use of five fire tenders. Meanwhile, an announcement from Engro Polymer stated that the company was assessing the cause of fire.
